Welcome!!

You've found my website! The purpose of this site is to explore and introduce people to dumbphones and digital minimalism, as well as analyzing why so many young people (mostly millenials and gen-z) are ditching their smartphones for flip phones and other single-use technology. Here you will find articles (webpages in the navbar) such as:

  • My personal digital manifesto regarding the internet and technology gif
  • Statistics on how phones and social media effect us
  • My "test subjects" (AKA friends) experiences as smartphone users
  • The Dictionary with the definitions to terms used on this website and in similar spaces
  • A list of professional articles on dumbphones
  • A list of tech commonly used by digital minimalists

a basic mobile phone that lacks the advanced

functionality characteristic of a smartphone.

Why?

So, the big question is why? Why are so many people downgrading their technology? While there are dozens of reasons—there are entire books made on the subject— the short answer is simply that we don’t need all the extra stuff and we can actually get along better without it. Social media, games, apps, entertainment, basically any information you could possibly want to access, all quite literally in the palm of your hand. Not only that, it makes sounds and vibrates to make you use it more. Every second you spend staring at these apps some billionaire gets like a million dollars. And you’re wasting your time. Time is a precious commodity that should be spent doing things that genuinely serve you and the things or people you care about. It should not be spent ingesting metaphorical slop with no value to anyone. Of course there are easier ways to limit screen time without changing your devices, but many people feel like it's the only way to make themselves stay off of it. It also removes the social pressure to be on your phone. You can’t because you don’t have one that can do whatever they’re asking. Limiting screen time to being an at-home thing only makes you so much more present in what you’re doing.
